The Terrific Trip to T.V.N.Z

On Wednesday the 7th of September the K.W.N team went to T.V.N.Z. The K.W.N team is made up of year six students who are involved in a competition where you have to produce a 5 minute documentary. The first stage of this process is putting together a storyboard,we were lucky enough to win this stage. For our efforts we were rewarded with a professional video camera called the AG-HMC41. This camera was worth over a whopping $4500. The reason we went to T.V.N.Z was to do the first part of our filming. We met Iian Stewart, we were very lucky to have an interview with him on satelites.  We learnt so much had a great time at T.V.N.Z. Thanks so much Iian.

Science fair presentations

Room 7's Science Fair presentations.
We started off deciding what a good topic would be, or what we wanted to find out. Our science fair had to be a fair test, which means only changing one variable. Next, we started typing our question, materials, method, controls and hypothesis. We gathered our materials together and started our fair test. While doing our fair test we recorded our results. Later we typed up our results and conclusion and created an effective title. After backing it we collected our information, photos and samples( if we had any ) and glued them on to our science boards. Some of us wanted to make ours a bit more effective and painted them a cool colour. When we had finished we went around the classes and observed other science boards. We enjoyed looking at all the other ways of presenting.
We hope you enjoy looking at our awesome movie of room 7's presentations.!!

Hurricanes Summary

Today we read a story about hurricanes and decided to summarise what we had read onto a bloggie.  We did this because one of the skills we are working on is summarising.
Check out our video and give us feedback on how we went.

KEEPING THE PAST ALIVE!

The yellow reading  group was reading about' Keeping The Past Alive.'
We learnt about how the people in the future kept the things in the past still in the same piece.

Another thing we learnt about is, in the museum they use special chemicals to protect the important and precious things.

We learnt about the Mona Lisa painting that Leonardo da Vinci created and how it is protected .

Something that is special to you and reminds you of something good that has happened, is a treasure. This means you want to keep it for as long as possible. You need to look after your precious things. You need to keep things clean and polished in a protective box or a container. eg medals, toys, books etc.

Nature is helpful in preserving hard objects like shells, bones and teeth . Sometimes these things are buried in mud or sand and can turn into fossils. We know a lot about dinosaurs, because scientist studied fossils of their bones.

Some ways of perserving objects are :

BONE:
*dry it and clean it
*put it in a special container! Don't bend it or fold it!

INSECTS:
*dry it out
*put it somewhere that other insects can't eat it. E.g. picture frame under glass.
*pin it so that parts don't break off.

PAINTING:
*don't really handle it too much
*protect it in a frame
*don't always put it in a sunny place

I hope you enjoyed our work!

Balloon Blowing

This experiment is about blowing up a balloon with CO2.  First I put the water into a drink bottle, then put a teaspoon of baking soda in and shook the bottle until they dissolved together.  It was then time to quickly add the vinegar or lemon juice and put the balloon on the mouth of the bottle.  We watched the balloon grow "make sure it doesn't pop!".  It was really fun doing that experiment with Room 7.
